In step with Sri Lanka’s power and energy strategy aimed at increasing the power generated through the renewable energy sector, the WKV group is dedicated to optimally use the abundant renewable energy resources to create environmentally sustainable electricity.
The WKV Group was formed through the creation and amalgamation of several companies many years ago. The acronym “WKV” stands for “Wimalasurendra, Kehelgamu Oya, Viduliya”, and seeks to pay tribute to Sri Lanka’s “Father of Hydropower”, the visionary, D.J. Wimalasurendra. It depicts the history of Mr Wimalasurendra’s proposal, in 1918, to combine the water potential of Maskeli Oya (the “Maskeli River”) and Kehelgamu Oya (the “Kehelgamu River”) and to divert them to produce 114.5 MW of viduliya (“electricity” in Sinhalese). In 1950, Mr Wimalasurendra successfully completed the Laxapana Hydro Power Scheme, paving way for many hydropower schemes that eventually made Sri Lanka self-sufficient in electricity while strengthening the economy.
